Carols were traditional hymns and chants written in Latin. Later, these were translated in vernacular languages.
The word ‘carol’ has originated from French word. Carol means circular dancing movements. With changing times, dancing was left behind and religious songs moved on and started becoming popular. Christmas carols generally use medieval chord. Many of the popular carols were composed in the nineteenth century. Nativity is one on the most used theme in Christmas carols. These carols were used in church in twelfth century by St. Francis of Assisi. The Protestant churches had banned carols due to their joyous themes. Later, in the reign of Queen Victoria they gained popularity. Carols are a combination of lyrics and Christmas music.
Christmas carols are of various types like Christian Christmas carols, traditional Christmas carols, popular Christmas carols, etc. Many countries have a tradition of carolers singing in groups on the streets on Christmas day. Many of the carols are folk songs passed from one generation to other. Hence, many of them are not documented. Some of the Christmas carols are easy to read and understand as they use simple language. Kids start learning carols from early childhood as they listen to their parents in homes and carolers in the church.
Christmas carols are great to rejuvenate and spread Christmas message among the masses. The basic motive for singing carols is to spread holiday cheer and joy among everyone. Christmas carols are simple and lucid and therefore, easy to understand and learn. The Christmas carols can be bought from local market, shopping malls in form of CDs and DVDs.
