One of his versus says:

"I Heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men"

However, on his another verse he says:

"And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth" I said;
For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men"

This song was later set into many tunes. The poem was also set into the 1845 composition 'Mainzer'. In 1950, Johnny Marks again tuned this song. Many people then recorded this version.
