- While these days, Christmas candles are mostly bought for gifting and decor, during the Victorian era, candles were used by people to decorate Christmas trees. Romans, while celebrating their Saturnalia festival, used to gift candles to guests. The Romans also offered candles to Saturn.
- The Pagans used candles in their Yule festivities. They considered the candle as a symbol of light and to mark a new beginning. In certain parts of Europe, the ancient and popular tradition of placing candles during Christmas season on windows continues till date. In the past, candles were placed in the windows with an intention of helping the Christ child wander from place to place on Christmas Eve.

It was in Germany that the custom of a lighted Christmas tree originated. This idea was brought to England by a German born Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria. Before long the idea spread out as the gentry started copying the Royal tradition of celebrating Christmas by way of decorating Christmas tree with wax candles.
