Christmas is one of the most popular festival celebrated all over the world. Christmas is the time to enjoy festivities with friends and family members. Parties, feasts and family reunion are integral parts of Christmas celebration. Families get busy in preparing for Christmas from the last week of November. Homes are cleaned and decorated with wreaths, twigs of holly and mistletoe and so on. A Christmas tree is brought home and decorated with paper flowers, tinsel and ornaments. Lighting is important part of Christmas decoration. One cannot think of Christmas without festive lights and great music. There are various types of Christmas lights.

Bubble lights are one of the types of Christmas lights. A bubble light has a vial filled with liquid. When the vial is heated and this leads to lighting of incandescent bulb. The liquid commonly used is methylene chloride. As the liquid starts boiling due to heat, it creates bubble at the base of the vial. These bubbles shine and give light. These bubble lights were used in Christmas decoration during the decades of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The manufacturing of bubble lights began in Manchester, England in 1940s. Slowly, they were seen in American markets. In the year 1946, Noma, a manufacturer of Christmas lights introduced them in US.

There are various kinds of bubble lights. The bubble lights were available in two base sizes. The first one was E10 and other one was E11. The bubble lights could be bought as individual entities as well as a string. Both the types were used for decorating homes and Christmas tree during Christmas. To get a good effect from this light, one has to keep the top of the tube cool. The tubes have to be kept upright all the time. Sometimes, one has to shake or tap the tube so that bubbles can be formed from the heated liquid.

The bubble lights are available in various colors. The liquid, vial as well as the incandescent bulb can be used in multiple colors to give a great coloring effect. The appearance of bubble lights is changing with time. Today, we see these lights with glitter. Glitter is added to give extra sparkle to the lights. These glittering bubble lights are used during nighttime in parties and feasts held during Christmas. The base i.e. vial is too undergoing change. Earlier it was always round in shape. But, today, it has shape of cats, head, Santa, snowmen and so on.

The modern bubble lights are beautiful decorative pieces, which are large. They can be kept on table and hanged on the roof. They are made of acrylic and clear plastic with permanent bubbles. The bulbs are replaced by light emitting diodes (LED). These modern bubble lights have one color or color changing LEDs.
