The Christmas holiday season starts from this day and ends on New Year. Before Christmas Eve, the entire house is cleaned and decorated to welcome the Christmas festival. The Christmas tree is decked up with all the decorations. The entire family is in festive mood and ready to celebrate the birth of Christ. The house is lit up with candles and Christmas lights. People visit church and attend the midnight mass. They exchange pleasantries and greetings with friends at the church.

The house is filled with activities. A lot of people play music and carols that help in making the right Christmas environment. The Christmas music, candle light and evening prayers at the church are the age old traditions followed on Christmas Eve. Special Christmas Eve supper is prepared for the family and visiting guests. Ham, fowl, fish, soups, crackers, etc. are used to prepare the traditional supper. Sausage and various types of cheese are served as appetizers with rum, vodka and beer. The supper served is light as a big meal is planned on the Christmas day.

Every family enjoys various traditions like watching a Christmas movie, reading stories from bible, attending midnight mass at the church and so on. The family spends quality time together. If it snows on Christmas Eve then it is considered as a good omen. People just enjoy the sight of the falling white snow flakes. The Christmas Eve is a time to wait for the birth of Christ and hear the ringing of musical Christmas bells with your near and dear ones. The kids hang stockings near the fireplace and Christmas tree to get gifts from Santa Claus. This is a popular tradition observed on Christmas Eve all round the world.
