Christmas is an occasion of celebration and enlightenment. A lot of things like parties, family get together, Christmas tree, Christmas feast are associated with this festival. The entire atmosphere of Christmas is filled with joy and happiness. Buying a Christmas tree and decorating it is a special activity carried out by the family. The Christmas tree is decorated with ornaments, tinsel, toppers and lights. The sweet and fresh smell of the Christmas tree adds the needed fervor to the festival. The decoration created by use of various lights has a great impact on the onlooker. Lights play a major role in the overall decoration of the Christmas tree.

In the earlier times, candles were used to decorate the Christmas tree. There were no means of lighting other than candles in those days. Wax or pins were used to hold the candles attached to the branches of the tree. It was quite dangerous as fire was caught if the right sort of care was not taken. Later, lanterns in small size and glass balls were used to hold the candles. One had to keep a close look at the flames as it may catch fire any time. When electric bulb was invented, those lights were used for decoration.

For the first time in the history of Christmas tree decoration, electric bulbs of different colors were used for decoration by Edward Johnson. He wrapped a wire of multi-colored electric bulbs around the Christmas tree. After some years, General Electric (GE) produced the Christmas lights and they were available in local markets, Christmas tree shops and shopping malls. These lights were costly and therefore; the common man could not afford it. The elite class used to light the Christmas tree with these electric bulbs. Albert Sadacca was the person who popularized the use of electric bulbs for lighting the Christmas trees.

This person offered lights at an affordable price so the common man could buy it. He used a string of electric bulbs to wind the Christmas tree. When this string was plugged, it lighted the entire tree. This started a trend and every family started using the electric mini bulbs. These bulbs were safe to use. When you buy a real or artificial Christmas tree, you just need to wind this string of multi colored mini electric bulbs so that your tree is lighted up. A lot of innovations are seen in Christmas tree lights due to recent advancement in technology and science.

Today, we find LED lights on Christmas tree. They give an attractive look to the tree and they are safe to use. Optical fiber trees are pre lit trees. The lights are already installed on the tree. The user has to just plug the wire in the electric socket and the tree is lit up. The lights in Christmas tree have undergone massive change and it will continue in coming years.
