The National Christmas tree is the Christmas tree decorated near the White House. Every year the television telecasts the live coverage of the event. And every American watches the live telecast. The president lights this large tree outside the White House in early days of Christmas holiday season. There are thousands of lights and special ornaments used to decorate this large tree. All the nearby trees that surround this Christmas tree are also decorated with special lights and decoration. This entire decoration for the specific period of Christmas is referred to as Pathway to Peace. The Pathway to Peace has small Christmas trees that represent the states and Union Territories of the country.
This tradition of having a National Christmas tree started in the year 1923. It began in the tenure of President Calvin Coolidge. The first tree used as an America's National Tree was Balsam Fir. This tree was cut and it came from the state of Vermont. This tradition has now become a routine and every year the three is well lit and decorated. The First lady takes special care to look into the ornaments, decoration, lights that are used. In the year 1932, a set of concealed speakers were installed in this tree. The speakers played Christmas Carols. Therefore, the tree was also called as a singing tree. The tree is replanted in the garden of the White House and re used. Till the year 1972, a new cut tree was brought to White House from different states every year.
From 1973, a Christmas tree is planted and used as the National Christmas tree. This decision was taken after considering the issue of deforestation and environment friendliness. The tree is lit with different colored electric bulbs, LED lights and solar energy lights. The tree is decorated with the latest innovative ideas that are happening in the field of lights. The National Christmas tree gives out a lot of political messages through the decoration and lighting. Many Presidents in the past have used different means to light the tree and show their sympathy towards world war victims, refugees in Iran and so on. The tree helps the President to give out his views to the entire nation as the ceremony of lighting the tree is telecast through out the country.
