Christmas sermons are an important part of Christmas rituals. The church service is incomplete without the priest giving sermons. A sermon is based on the passage from the Bible which the priest later elaborates upon. These sermons usually are a religious talk but sometimes based on some moral subjects as well. The priest may also include personal experiences while giving the oration. The sermon might be lengthy or could even be short depending on the presenter. People get motivated, inspired and more devoted to follow the path shown by Jesus Christ.

Few Christmas sermon samples could be mentioned as below:

  • Christmas Joy: Luke 2:8-11

Christmas is time to celebrate and have a joy filled time. Christians go to the church to attend the mass; they sing carols and feel a sense of joy for the birth of Christ. Virgin Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit and was given instruction to name the child Jesus who would cleanse the people of all their sins. A group of shepherds were first told about the news of great joy, arrival of the son of God on the Earth by the holy angels. Jesus was born in Bethlehem. So, the shepherds went to Bethlehem to find Mary, Joseph and the baby that was lying in a manger. The shepherd found everything as had been told to them. They returned praising the God. But for many today the meaning of joy has changed drastically. People are trying to derive happiness from their surroundings, from material gain, from circumstances etc. Increasing number of people are getting materialistic and less spiritual. Even if one has everything available in the world, he/she is hollow from inside unless God lives in their heart and soul. That would be the greatest joy they would ever have.

  • Christmas tears: Matthew 2:16-18

When baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem to Virgin Mary it ushered in great joy. But for King Herod it was dreadful as he comes to know about the birth of the new king of the Jews. This news is broken to him by the three kings that pay visit to baby Jesus in Bethlehem. In the quest to not lose his throne he orders all boy children under the age of two years in Bethlehem or in its vicinity to be killed. The words of prophet, Jeremiah becomes true when the mourning voice of Rachel is heard from Ramah. Rachel was weeping for her children who were slaughtered at the order of King Herod.

In the church the infants who were massacred are known as "Holy Innocents" and claimed as the first Christian Martyrs. So, while on one hand Mary was delighted at the birth of the son of God, on the other hand, Rachel was weeping her heart out mourning the loss of her children

  • Overcoming Loneliness: Isaiah 7:14

When the baby in the womb of Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit, the angels of the lord instructed her to name the baby boy Jesus which means savior. The son of God was born as human to come to Earth, live with fellow human beings and save the people from their sins. Son of God is also called, Immanuel that means, "God with us". Perhaps this is the name that best describes God, as he came down to Earth to live among us as one among us in the form of blood and flesh. He lived, died and was resurrected for us.

Man though surrounded by family and friends still has that emptiness inside him. The emptiness that seeks to get closer to the God, that yearns to know him, to be under his shadow. The void that we know only God can fill. Man wants to know if God knows him, cares for him, knows where he stays, what he does and he wants God to hear his prayers. He is always with us, one only needs to look around and he won't find himself alone.

  • Love means telling the truth: Corinthians 7:8-13

The truth is the reality. Something that is already there, no one can escape but sometimes turn a blind eye to. It helps temporarily but in the long run it does come back and one has to face the reality even if it's hard hitting. Like a bitter pill, truth is only for one's own good. It helps to keep one grounded. Truth may not be easy to tell neither easy to hear, it's difficult but essential for a person to grow and understand things. Those who always compliment others aren't the friends that one should need in life. Friends are those who also point out one's faults and mistakes and help become a better human being. And these are the people who truly love us and want to see us happy and content in life.

Christmas Sermons are essential part of Church proceedings on the Christmas. Relevant quotations from the Bible are taken by the priest and he delivers the sermon to the people who attend the mass. The priest may also add from his personal account to make things simple and decipherable to the followers. Usually, Christmas sermons revolve around the importance of Christmas, birth of Jesus Christ, its relevance etc.
